Voter Registration Deadline for Nov. 4 Election Approaches Oct. 20
The deadline to register to vote in Sonoma County’s Nov. 4 Statewide Special Election is Oct. 20, according to Registrar of Voters Evelyn Mendez. Eligible residents who miss this date can still use same-day registration at the Registrar of Voters or any Vote Center. To find nearby locations, visit SoCoVotes.com for maps and hours of Vote Centers and Ballot Drop Boxes.
Voters must be U.S. citizens, 18 or older, and not in prison for a felony. Registration is available online at RegisterToVote.ca.gov until 11:59 p.m. on Oct. 20, or by submitting a paper form to the Registrar’s Office (435 Fiscal Drive, Santa Rosa) by that date. The office is open weekdays 8 a.m.–5 p.m., with extended weekend hours Oct. 25–26 and Nov. 1–2, and 7 a.m.–8 p.m. on Election Day.

Sonoma County Democrats Endorse Measure I to Fund Petaluma Schools

Every Baby Born in Sonoma County Has Up to $175 Waiting for College
Sonoma County families welcoming a new baby can celebrate another milestone: their child’s first scholarship. Through the California Kids Investment and Development Savings Program (CalKIDS), every baby born in California on or after July 1, 2022, automatically receives a CalKIDS Scholarship Account — totaling over $1 million reserved for Sonoma County children. The state invests up to $175 per child: $100 for being born in California, $25 for claiming the account online, and $50 for linking it to a ScholarShare 529 College Savings Plan. Claiming is simple and free at CalKIDS.org with basic birth information.
Research shows that children with savings are three times more likely to attend college and four times more likely to graduate. “CalKIDS is a powerful way to show families that their child’s future matters from the very beginning,” said Jackie Thu-Huong Wong, Executive Director of First 5 California. Since launching in 2022, CalKIDS has created over 5 million accounts and invested $2 billion statewide, helping families turn small steps into lifelong educational opportunities.

Library Honors Volunteers During Friends Week

The Sonoma County Library celebrates the 20th annual Friends of the Library Week from October 19–25, recognizing volunteers who strengthen local libraries through fundraising, stewardship, and donations.
“The Friends give generously of their time and talents to raise funds, advocate for strong libraries, and champion programs that bring people together,” said Library Commission Chair Sarah Laggos. “Their efforts ensure that our libraries remain vibrant community hubs full of discovery, culture, and lifelong learning.”
Ten Friends groups across the county support library branches through used book sales and donations for programs and projects. On October 8, the Library Commission approved a resolution honoring these groups, praising their volunteerism and community impact.

The Marin County Tax Collector has mailed 91,229 property tax bills totaling $1.56 billion, a 5.63% increase over last year. Smart lockers are now available at several libraries across Sonoma County.

Falls are the leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries for adults 65+. In California in 2023, falls caused 2,521 deaths, 114,427 hospitalizations, and 317,582 emergency visits. Nationally, non-fatal fall costs reached $80 billion in 2020, projected to surpass $101 billion by 2030, with most covered by Medicare. Risk factors include vision or hearing loss, lower body weakness, medications, chronic conditions, and home hazards. Prevention tips: remove tripping hazards, improve lighting, add grab bars, and use seating aids. Tools like the Falls Free CheckUp and CDC’s STEADI help reduce risks and support independence.
