Medieval Sword Fighting for Teens
Teens in grades 7–12 can explore medieval sword fighting at three library locations, with a live steel-sword demo and a chance to practice with foam weapons. The Rohnert Park session is Dec. 8, 4–5:30 p.m., with limited spots and optional registration. The program also covers historical armor and battlefield techniques.

Climate Series Screenings Come to Sonoma County Libraries
Sonoma County Library will host screenings of “Climate California,” the Emmy-winning PBS series exploring climate change through sound, wildlife and human resilience. Each event includes a discussion with series director Charles Loi, who offers insight into filming redwoods, electric planes and whales — and how tools like AI and big data help protect ecosystems. Screenings include Episode 2 (Dec. 17, 6–7:30 p.m.) and Episode 3 (Jan. 21, 6–7:30 p.m.) at Rohnert Park Cotati Library, and Episode 8 (Jan. 24, 1–2:30 p.m.) at Guerneville Library. Amphibian Exploration Hike at Sugarloaf Ridge
Join researcher Wendy Hayes for an amphibian-focused hike at Sugarloaf Ridge State Park on December 6, from 11:30 a.m.–2:30 p.m. Participants will look under rocks, logs, and streams to find salamanders, frogs, and tadpoles. The event is free; registration requires a $5 refundable deposit per adult. Meet at the park’s main parking lot. Free transportation is available within 20 miles. Public Hearing on Citywide Prohousing Measures – Dec. 10
The Citrus Heights City Council will hold a public hearing on December 10 at 6 p.m. to consider renewing the city’s Prohousing Designation and applying for Prohousing Incentive Program funds. The proposals involve citywide policy actions with no environmental impact, exempt under CEQA §15061(b)(3). Residents may submit written comments beforehand or speak at the hearing at 6360 Fountain Square Drive. If the matter is continued, public input will remain open until the final hearing. Accessibility accommodations are available with 48 hours’ notice by contacting the City Clerk.

Festival of Lights Returns to Mendocino Coast Gardens
The 15th annual Festival of Lights at the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens brings back the coast’s most dazzling holiday tradition from November 28 to December 21. The event, held Fridays through Sundays (5–7 PM), features glowing pathways, festive displays, and local treats, all supporting horticulture, conservation, and education programs. Substantial Amendment to the 2025 Citizen Participation Plan
On January 28, 2025, the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors approved the 2025 Community Participation Plan (CPP) for the 2025-2029 Consolidated Plan. The updated CPP removed language related to certain procedures that were followed during the pandemic and associated waivers permitted by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) that are no longer applicable, and the updates also provided clarification on the public participation process. Additionally, the title of the document was changed from “Citizen Participation Plan” to “Community Participation Plan” to foster inclusivity in public participation.
